PA3 and the Princetoniana Committee Need Your Help

Last summer PA3 teamed up with the Alumni Association's Princetoniana Committee to conduct interviews with alums from the 1940s. Those interviews, focused on the alums' experiences at Princeton, form a part of a larger body of oral history of our beloved alma mater housed in the University Archives at Mudd Library. Of the old guard interviews conducted thus far, a common thread is recurring mention of a few professors, fondly remembered even after many decades, as truly outstanding scholars and teachers. The existing oral history transcript library includes interviews with several venerable professors, and the PA3 and Princetoniana Committee are very interested in adding to it by identifying and interviewing those professors that truly stand out in the memories of alumni, both undergraduate and graduate.

Consequently, you could do us a great service by giving some thought to your Princeton experience and replying with the names of any cherished professors, including a short explanation of what subject they taught and why they stand out so plainly in memory. We will use this input to help guide us in the selection of professors emeriti to interview. Please respond to Tom Swift '76 or call him at 908-369-1601. Thank you.

Open Opportunities for PA3 from Alumni Corps

Princeton AlumniCorps invites you to volunteer your time and talent at a local nonprofit organization through the Community Volunteers program.

Community Volunteers connects alumni with significant career experience to nonprofits with critical needs. Alumni volunteer their professional skills
to fill these needs through short-term, well-defined projects.  Gain new professional experience and expand your network while helping the community. Our nonprofit partner organizations have strong Princeton ties and are doing amazing work- providing innovative environmental education, engaging college students to educate prisoners and empowering disadvantaged children.

For more information about each of these opportunities, please visit our Opportunities page. To apply, please complete your Volunteer Profile.

**All of these projects can be done remotely after an initial on-site meeting.

The Delaware River Steamboat Floating Classroom, Inc. (SPLASH) is an educational non-profit foundation, in the greater Princeton area, which provides adventures in learning environmental science and history aboard a real paddlewheel steamboat and is offering three fun opportunities.  SPLASH was started by the late Princeton professor and renowned psychologist, Bart Hoebel.  Open projects include Marketing Specialist Website Consultant and Funding Researcher.

The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is one of the most respected and recognized residential environmental education centers
in the northeastern United States and is headed by Princeton graduate Jeff Rosalsky ’85. The mission of PEEC is to advance environmental education, sustainable living, and appreciation for nature through hands-on experience in a national park.  PEEC’s innovative EcoZone includes a life-sized bald eagle’s nest and bat cave. Opportunities include Translator  and Sustainability Energy Technology Coordinator.

The Petey Greene Prisoner Assistance Program in the greater Princeton area recruits and trains undergraduates, graduate students and local residents
to be effective tutors and teachers in nearby prisons. They also raise awareness of the need for reform in the prison system. Princeton alumnus Jim Farrin ’58 co-founded Petey Greene and is looking to fill the following position: Expansion Plan Program Manager

The Westminster Community Life Center serves neighborhood families in the greater Trenton area through supplemental educational services such as after school programming and early literacy intervention.  Their GetSET afterschool program has strong ties to the PACE Center. Opportunities include Fiscal Support SpecialistHuman Resources Strategist and Grant Research Specialist

PA3 Event Grants - Apply for up to $300!

Request for Proposals:

PA3 Event Grants
(Receive Up to $300 for Your Event!)

Do you have an idea for an event that may be interesting to other Princeton alumni and haven’t the funds or ability to reach out to other local alumni?   Here’s your chance to get it started…with a grant for up to $300!  All ideas are welcome.  Keep reading for details...

The Princeton Area Alumni Association (PA3) requests grant applications for PA3 events.   We are especially interested in events that 1) are a different activity than previously tried, 2) interest a different segment of our constituents, and 3) are located outside of the Princeton area.   Our region encompasses New Brunswick to Mansfield, and Flemington to Freehold.  The demographics of our members span the gamut of ages, ethnicities, professions, interests, etc.   As such, the PA3 Executive Committee is always looking for new ideas and outreach.

Here are the details:
Please submit in writing (email is fine) a brief description of your idea and your estimate of costs.  Although your event may target a group or area, you must agree to invite all alumni that live within our region to attend (including graduate students and parents of current students). You may limit the total number of attendees, if you like.  We will certainly help with the event if you need it:  advertising, supporting planning and logistics, collecting RSVPs and/or ticket payments (if desired), decorating with PA3 banners or other paraphernalia, and reimbursing expenses up to $300.

Please note:
The grant monies cannot be used for commercial interests or to be donated to a charity or cause.  It can be used to buy supplies or tickets for a charity event at which PA3 members participate.

Submit proposals to:
Princeton Area Alumni Association
c/o Kristin Epstein, President
11 Madison Dr.
Princeton Junction, NJ 08550
PrincetonAreaAlumni@gmail.com

There is no due date.  Multiple proposals from one person are welcome. You will be notified within 2 weeks if your proposal is accepted.

Thank you!

Come to the lawn in front of Nassau Hall to cheer on the members of Princeton's newest freshman class as they march from Opening Exercises through FitzRandolph Gate as they begin their undergraduate careers. It is a great opportunity to don your P-rade attire and make it a true Tiger experience!

PA3 First Friday Lunch - September 7th, 2012

First Friday Lunch at the Nassau Club - September 7th, 2012

Join us for First Fridays, a monthly recurring event for undergraduate and graduate Princeton alumni, graduate students, and parents.  On the first Friday of each month, area alumni and their guests meet to enjoy a prix fixe luncheon buffet at the Nassau Club in downtown Princeton.  As a special bonus for PA3, a Princeton PhD candidate presents his/her work to the group in this informal setting.  Topics vary monthly and are always interesting!

This month, we will be joined by Darren Pais, a fifth-year Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Kuwait who works with Professor Naomi Leonard on studying emergent collective behavior of groups in biology and in robotics. His dissertation will contribute to the understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms for cooperation and tradeoff management in biological collectives, as well as the design of decision-making protocols for robotic groups. Among specific group behaviors that Darren studies are collective predator pursuit and prey evasion and collective migration. Darren has been the recipient of several prizes and fellowships, including a Wu Fellowship, the Athena Feron Prize, the Sayre Award, a Harari Fellowship and the Crocco Award for Outstanding Teaching. This year he is the recipient of the Graduate School's Harold W. Dodds Honorific Fellowship.

Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay PA3's annual dues), lunch includes the Nassau Club’s full buffet as well as a complementary beverage (wine, beer, soft drink). Pre-registration is required.

This month, we will be joined by Ismaiel Yakub, a Lecturer in the Keller Center at the Engineering School.  Yakub received his MA and PhD in 2010 and 2012, respectively, in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  He will talk with us about his work, including his latest activity: instructor for the "Sustainable Buildings Team" of the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS).  The team's objective is to apply a holistic approach to design and build a scalable, easily constructed, inexpensive, safe and sustainable modular housing system.  This year, Yakub's EPICS team will be focusing on improving the design of the BEE HOME, so called because of its honeycomb shape.

Specially priced at $25/person (or $30 if you choose not to pay PA3's annual dues), lunch includes the Nassau Club’s full buffet as well as a complementary beverage (wine, beer, soft drink). Pre-registration is required.
