“Decoding the Realm(s) of Quantum Computing:
Tilting at Tackling the Computationally Infeasible”

Quantum Computing is poised to revolutionize myriad fields: cryptography, chemistry, medicine, optimization and machine learning. In contrast to familiar transistors, with a state 0 or 1, the quantum analog of a transistor or bit of information, aka a qubit, can be in a “superposition” of 0 and 1 simultaneously (e.g., 0 + 1, 0 - 1); and multiple qubits can be entangled, i.e., their states depend on each other. These two principles, superposition and entanglement, could enable powerful new algorithms to solve problems far beyond the capacity of today’s digital computing. Like the aviation term, “holding patterns,” maneuvers designed to delay something already in flight, while keeping it within a specified distance --- Quantum Computing may in the next decade bring such exciting new achievements as: factoring large numbers; allowing for RSA decryption; calculating binding energies of complex molecules; and solving large-scale brute-force problems. Andrew Houck, BSE Princeton 2000, PhD Harvard 2005, will introduce us to this strange new world and describe how it’s likely to transform ours.

June 30, 2019 - Following a summer break, the PA3 book club will resume its monthly meetings on Thursday, September 26, from 7-8:30 pm in the Frist Class of 1952 Room (A03, on the cafeteria level). Our selection is:

The PA3 book club meets on the last Thursday evening of each month (except July, August & December) from 7-8:30, usually in East Pyne or Frist. Selections alternate, with occasional exceptions, between fiction and non-fiction, and the authors or books typically have a Princeton connection. Book club meetings are open to all PA3 members and their spouses/partners, and no RSVP is needed.

PA3 Goes Out to the Old Ball Game!

Join PA3 and celebrate America's favorite pastime as we watch the Trenton Thunder take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats  on Saturday, June 29, 2019 beginning at 7 p.m. from the comfort of a private luxury suite at Arm & Hammer Park.
	The climate-controlled suites on the third level of the ballpark feature indoor and outdoor seating, wait service and a flat screen TV. We'll also have a buffet with burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, and snacks and soda. (Cold beer is, of course, available at the park and can be bought a la carte by individuals.)  Our suite, number 8, is right above home plate!
Game begins at 7 p.m. Stay afterward for the Fireworks Spectacular! The Thunder is New Jersey's own championship American minor league baseball team and a Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
This family-friendly event kicks off the new fiscal year as we welcome new members to PA3 and say a big THANK-YOU to our dues-paying members.

“Challenges in Next-Generation STEM Education:

Connecting the K-12 Experience to College Curricula”

Since 1999, world-renowned iD Tech camps have delivered STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to the K-12 set; and from 2010, Princeton University’s Council on Science & Technology has fostered intellectual exchange, interdisciplinary research and collaborations between STEM fields and the arts, humanities and social sciences.  However, while some youngsters take a STEM path early in life, others come to it only in later years.  Providing smoother transitions to college for the former; creating more welcoming entry platforms for the latter; and enhancing STEM’s role in making us all more informed citizens --- are core critical issues our speakers will discuss.
